Default Too much info...no fun.

Sometimes I think we'd all be better off if there was no....or very little info available on the web. How cool would it be bumping into a boss and stealing an Elite spell by accident. But no...everyone finds where he is on map and goes straight to his spawn point. I know someone is going to respond with "if you don't want to look then don't" , but it's the age old problem that if everyone else is...then you have to, too. I look at the maps....but only when I'm really stuck. I think researching everything on the web takes some..not all...but some of the fun out of the game. That's why they have warnings on the GW start up screen telling you about programs and skill things stealing your password. They don't want anyone having an unfair advantage. And since most of the people playing this game can't use the internet worth crap....that's what all of us here have...an unfair advantage.

Just a humble opinion...not trying to start a flame war. But don't you think the game would be a little bit funner if you didn't know exactly what was going to happen before it happens because you read it on the web first?

Like old school Mario... That was great.

People didn't know you could warp right along in the game via the pipes... Classic stuff that I miss.

Just do what I do and stay away from forums like Tyrian Explorers' League. I like to stay spoiler-free when I play a game, I'm the boycotter of strategy guides and whatnot. I'll leave that stuff to when I've "completed" it, then on my second run I can go back and do everything in the game.

I'm sorry, but for everyone's sake I feel compelled to correct you on this point. The reason that Arenanet warn you not to download such applications is because many have been discovered that contain keyloggers and trojans, that means some punk kid cheapskate pirate could get hold of your account details and use it whenever they like (blocking you from logging in while they are using it) simply because they can't be bothered paying the £17.99 to buy the damn game.

If this happened and Arenanet discovered it, your account would be disabled. Would you like to risk it? I know I wouldn't. It's not so that you don't discover the secrets, Arenanet are partners with publishers like Prima who make strategy guides and other books that give you information about everything in the game.

Or just be like me, read because an inquiring mind WANTS to know.......but doesn't have the memory capacity to retain it all.......so when I get to an area I recall reading about....rather than open a webpage behind the game....I just hunker down and do MY best...win/lose/draw.
It's exciting to know I have things to look forward to, even if they tell me "how to" beat a hard area....I'm such a non-conformist and coupled with the afore mentioned memory issues....makes for MY OWN experience :-)

That would suck. It would leave people with less options, which is generally bad. Much better to allow people to choose for themselves whether they want to use the info or not.

We would all be worse off if there were fewer options in life, even if the options lost were ones you weren't going to use anyhow. It is far better to choose not to use an option than to be denied it, even if the end result is the same.

Actually, one of the real age old problems in the world is that far too many people believe that.

Another age old problem is people who insist that if they prefer to do something one way, that everyone else should do it the same way.

All that having been said, what *I* would love to see is things like hand drawn maps, like you might realistically get in a medieval society, rather than screenshots of completed game maps, essentially satellite images of the area you're going to explore. I want a little direction, but I want to have to explore, too. Perhaps even better would be an explorers guide where the author simply describes how to get from A to B, without showing maps -- you aren't completely without direction, but you still need to figure out how to get there from the directions. "Hint books" instead of "walkthroughs", etc. That's what's currently missing on the web wrt GW, IMHO.

Kinda funny, it's all an issue of societal conformity. What's ironic is that i'm in the middle of working on an analytical thesis paper of the exact same topic.

I like the fact the info is there; after all, though i hate to do it, if i get stuck at something (like really frustratingly stuck for ages) i like to check up on it. I like to post my character build as a comparison for others... but i dont understand the people who insist on knowing the exact mathematical formula behind drops, or starting threads like "I'm buying the game on Saturday, tell me exactly what weapons/stats/skills to use for my warrior"

I like that the information is there when I need it, but I'm like a previous poster -- I rarely retain much of what I read. I get a general sense of where I'd like my char headed, and I go for it. I completely see your point, though. When everyone else is running around with elites, runes, wicked weapons and fully infused armour, sometimes turning to the available information is all you can do if you want to even hope to keep up.

I'm glad certain info is on the net. Like when to use the expert salvage kit....no scratch that...trial and error would show you. And if everyone had to figure it out...that would still be fun.

A few of you commented that the choice is mine to look or not look, but because many people are looking that puts us on an uneven playing field. I like the idea of finish the game naturally first...then use a guide to go back and get the things you missed.

One thing GW could do to put us on a more level playing field. Is to randomize the Elite skill locations. And possibly the Bosses who use them. One day one boss uses an Elite skill...and the next day another one uses it. So when you find one you are genuinely surprised and happy. And that seems more in accordance with their "anti-uber player" attitude.

You would be suprised and happy because your frustration over not being able to find something that use to be static is over.

You would be suprised and happy...because something you weren't wasting your time looking for like some LEET player just happend to drop in your lap....what a nice surprise indeed. The minority of players are "power" players....not the majority.

I find that would be a really cool thing to implement on a game. You still see your little compass but the main map, the (m), is hand drawn by YOU, the PLAYER. No one else can use your map and when you try to screenshot it, the image is destorted or something, I don't know. Maybe have a few NPC drawn maps along the way that can give you a general sense of where to go, what the area basically looks like, but you have to draw in the rest of the map.. you have to explore it and take the time to make a map you can read.
That would be interesting and fun to use.

i just have to correct you there. thats just plain wrong. ArenaNet doesn't give a shit if you know something you shouldn't at your level, as long as its not an exploit of the game-engine, or something like that, the reason that msg is there is... stupid people...

i honestly don't think ANet cares about people who lose their account, you know the key-loggers are out there, and you're stupid if you run it along with your game without checking it first, that msg makes it look like they care, makes them look good in everyone else's eyes... if i were them atleast, i wouldn't care about people who lost their account, if they lose it, its their own fault. try sending them an e-mail about loosing your account, even if its not true, i bet you they wont even think about replacing your loss

Great post...For someone who likes to call other people stupid, you might just have the dumbest post on this thread. Congratulations!
